ABSTRACT

Major issues regarding the extent of medical care of enslaved Africans include: the extent of illness, the type of illness, the quality of medical care provided, and the congruency of the medical maintenance theory in reference to enslaved African people. Characteristics of extent of medical care include: the slaveowners' perspective; the enslaved Africans perspective; the differing medical care roles of Whites and enslaved Africans; critical/acute care of enslaved Africans; and general health maintenance. Slaveowners' perspectives regarding medical care for Africans varied. While most slaveowners emphasized the medical care they provided to enslaved Africans, a few among their ranks (notably women) provided another perspective. Slave planters provided specific details and observations on the "care of negro slaves." Many enslaved Africans were reminded of die plantation policies on cleanliness.
