ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author begins with what was happening in the world, before she turn more concretely to the evolution of her ideas about homosexuality. The reevaluation of psychoanalytic views on homosexuality that took place in the 1970s and 1980s was first stoked by gay liberation and the revised views on gender were first sparked by the women’s movement. L. Ovesey had long cut himself loose from classical psychoanalytic theory, particularly from libido theory, in the way that he thought about homosexuality. Fantasies that make use of the penis for dependent gratification may also occur in a heterosexual man in the form of a homosexual wish. Some of the group performed well heterosexually and experienced pleasure in their encounters, but were troubled by their “homosexual” fantasies. Some of the patients had come to fear they were latent homosexuals.
