ABSTRACT

In general, people like to feel in control of the situations which they are in. When the degree of control that they perceive themselves to have falls below a desired level, the discrepancy causes anxiety and they seek, perhaps without conscious intent, to increase their control. The means by which they do this may be subtle. In this chapter we consider the nature of power and its relation to control. We shall see that it is a more slippery concept than might appear at first sight.
