ABSTRACT

The community college system was established in 1968. Community colleges these days are usually funded by state, county, or city government, and they are mandated to respond to local needs. The salient characteristic of community colleges is that they are open to all, in contrast to the selective winnowing imposed by traditional colleges and universities. In 1992, the community college and technical college systems in Connecticut were merged, in large part to save money. The Connecticut community college system is unionized. Faculty workload and working conditions are specified in a statewide collective bargaining agreement. A community volunteer with acting talents served as my co-leader. The small psychodrama theater created received positive feedback from the patient-participants. Community colleges are also sometimes called '2-year colleges', and before World War II, when most operated under private auspices, they were most often called 'junior colleges'.
