ABSTRACT

He was in the honors section at Northeast High School, an inner-city school in Philadelphia. His college plans depended on finding scholarship money. His college course was set, but not through any active decision of my own. When he entered Penn he was still interested in a military career, but he was also interested in medicine. He believe that he was the first or among the first undergraduates at the University of Pennsylvania to be given such an appointment. He now found himself in the ideal position he had described during my undergraduate oral exams; he was teaching, doing counseling at the college, clinical work at the hospital, and research on the antecedents of aggression in children. His first academic position was at UCLA in the Neuropsychiatric Institute. He has worked in a variety of settings: a large university, a psychiatric hospital, a community mental health center, and a small private liberal arts college.
