ABSTRACT

This examination of the pharmaceutical industry in South Africa is informed, among others, by De Villiers and Scott (1986), Scott and Reekie (1985, 1987), Reekie (1999) and the reports of the various government commissions that at one point or another since the 1960s have examined the industry. In particular, use was made of the following government commissions’ reports:

1. Report of the Commission of Inquiry into High Cost of Medical Services and Medicines (1962). This is also known as the Snyman Report, after its chairman H. W. Y. Snyman.
