ABSTRACT

Workbooks for recovery from eating disorders have been used extensively in psychotherapy, especially cognitive-behavioral models tested in randomized clinical trials (RCTs). In the past decade researchers have attempted to discover whether using these workbooks in a self-help format is effective for some portion of the population. These books, often called guides or manuals, meet the criteria for L’Abate’s definition of a workbook (see Chapter 1)—they contain written homework assignments on specific topics and stepwise, written instructions on when and how to do them. This chapter reviews published workbooks supported by research-based evidence of outcomes that are used in psychotherapy or self-help for anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), or binge-eating disorder (BED).
