ABSTRACT

The action of neuronal machinery in the therapist's brain is having an indirect … effect on the neuronal machinery in the patient's brain. (A. J. Psychiatry 155: 4 1998) I think I’m inside out, but maybe I’m just outside in. If my brain connects to eyes and ears, is my outside really inside or the other way about? If you change my mind with input, did your inside travel outside create neurotransmitters somewhere within? When I blush throughout the session did your speech transform my thoughts into understanding through my skin? If you think, therefore I am, how will I separate who is outside from whom I think resides within? If I’m allowed to choose what happens, you know I’ll pick the status quo: remain bewildered and inside-out, rather than a savvy, outside-in.
