ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book shows that emerging feminists come to their feminism differently as they are in a different cultural context than were second wave feminists. It discusses the social and historical context of young women’s lives and how they might have been lulled into a false sense that feminism is no longer necessary in this new century. The chapter also shows that feminism is germane to third wave psychotherapists and focuses on issues of power with a particular emphasis on relational power. It presents a novel feminist approach for working with adolescent girls who have not yet been assigned a wave number. For young feminists, the metaphorical manifestation dubbed the third wave, the world is a completely different place than it was for the previous generation.
