ABSTRACT

This chapter considers need for better evaluations of interventions for fathers. It focuses on the value of a generative fathering conceptual framework for approaching intervention work with fathers. The chapter highlights value and necessity of creative, nontraditional intervention approaches to supporting fathers, and call for greater sensitivity to the ways men experience the world, as well as important systemic nature of fathering specifically involving the critical mother-father relationship. Fathers who have had positive experiences participating in educational or clinical interventions may become ambassadors of responsible fatherhood to other men and boys. This chapter deals with the success of some states to establish legal paternity of all children and whether it helps encourage more responsible fathering behavior in long run. Scott Coltrane, a prominent researcher on fathering, argues that various trends are coming together to help more fathers become responsible family men.
