ABSTRACT
This chapter identifies the leading political science and international relations journals of the twentieth century. It reviews political science journal rankings and the criteria used in selecting journals for this project. The selected journals will then be listed and described. This tool is organized into two parts: the science citation index journal citation reports and, of major concern in this essay because it contains political science journals, the Social Sciences Citation Index Journal Citation Reports. This method was replicated by Roettger, who asked individuals listed in the 1976 American political science association directory to rank the same 10 journals on an identical 0-3 scale. The top three journals are identified for five categories: general political science journals, and four major subdivisions ofthe discipline-American politics, comparative politics, international relations, and political theory. Journal of Politics was seriously considered for the general political science category, while Congress and the Presidency was under consideration for American politics.
