ABSTRACT

Identifying the most influential engineering and computer science journals is like trying to hit a moving target while blindfolded. Even with unobstructed vision, the frequent appearance of new journals in fields that are hard to categorize made 20th century engineering and computer science li-brarianship challenging. After looking at general engineering, the chapter discuss the main branches of engineering, followed by many subdivisions. Civil engineering is the conception, design, construction, and management of residential and commercial buildings, water supply facilities, and transportation systems for goods and people, as well as the control of the environment for the maintenance and improvement of the quality of life. One could argue that the field of petroleum engineering began with the drilling of the first oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania. The invention of the telegraph was the first practical use of electricity. The ACM was founded as the first educational and scientific computing society with the purpose of disseminating research efforts in computer science.
