ABSTRACT

This chapter considers international meetings and visits from the perspective of one local group, the West Yorkshire Homeworking Unit in Britain. It is not intended to be a comprehensive record, as there have been many meetings besides those that know of or have participated in. The account shows how these links have developed at a number of levels and requires further development into a wider network. In 1988, a group of women drawn from local community organizations, the voluntary sector, and church organizations convened a conference on homeworking in Bradford in the North of England. Homeworker support groups around England have used a variety of innovative tools to reach homeworkers which the West Yorkshire Unit has adopted. The Unit made contact with homeworker advocates in the Netherlands at an early stage of its development. The Dutch Women's Union, part of the Dutch Trade Union Confederation (FNV), has played a central role in efforts to improve the situation of homeworkers.
