ABSTRACT

In an attempt to understand the meaning of Whiteness author find herself, born and raised in South Africa and now a US citizen, yearning for a different way to be inhabited by race. 'Unraveling' is her effort to undo and dislodge herself from this position of privilege. As she try to unravel her Whiteness, unraveling herself at times, she keep searching for a way through. She knows somewhere she covets a fantasy that she can be completely undone, her Whiteness erased. Whiteness dominates through normalizing itself and constantly mutates while always maintaining supremacy. There are enormous variations of power among White people related to class, gender, sexuality, and other factors and many ways to be White. Nonetheless, White power reproduces itself and can never be separated from privilege. A serious criticism of psychoanalysis has been its insistence on seeking only internal explanations for sociocultural phenomena. Psychoanalysis has especially neglectful of the importance of power in the structuring of psychic processes.
