ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author aims to prepare a table for classification in clans, consisting of a number of such analogical correspondences which he selected from his reading in this literature, especially the Anuttarayoga Tantra. The rationale for the correspondences on a given line of the table is harder to establish. The threefold correspondences in the Buddhist Tantras are especially in terms of the Body, Speech, and Mind—the “three mysteries” of the Buddha: Body—mudraSpeech—mantraMind—Samadhi. One way Mkhas grub rje’s statement can be understood is that the Tantras accept the Realist’s position of analogy as an independent source of knowledge. If this is a basic reason, it would still be valid even for those tantric works that include much Yogacara terminology, such as the “store consciousness” for in such a case this terminology from another school could be considered as part of the syncretic character of the Tantras.
