ABSTRACT
The neologism contained in the title of this chapter was first coined by, or at least attributed to, James Joyce. I chanced across it, together with the phrase in which it appears, some two years ago, cited in the ‘Introduction’ to the Penguin edition of Ulysses by the Irish academic, Declan Kiberd (Kiberd, 2000).
