The marvelous image with which Dante begins his Divine Comedy has become the archetypal symbol par excellence of a dark place in the collective imaginary: the disturbing mirror of the inner world, where one can authentically find oneself only by agreeing to lose oneself in the intricate labyrinths of the soul.
