ABSTRACT

S1mØne is a reworking of the Pygmalion story set in present-day Hollywood. Only one character recognises the likeness to the older story of the events which have caught up the lead protagonists. The trickster has delivered Viktor to the lowest point in his fortunes as he is arraigned for her murder and faces the death penalty. Yet the calamity Max has engineered will ultimately initiate processes that lead to Viktor's restoration to a renewed, though different, form of life. A common role of the child in religion and mythology, hence also in analytical psychology, is to offer to the adults with whom it interacts opportunities for rebirth into renewed self-understanding and even spiritual life. our cue to detour and link cultural theory with post-Jungian concepts of anima and animus by examining the brutalising pattern of the British and North American tabloid press in conferring stardom on individuals who are in the public eye.
