ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 discussed the essentials of Analysis of Variance, and these details will be sufficient for the vast majority of undergraduate students for most of their project work. However, for those who are curious, or who are conducting or planning more advanced research, the topics covered in this chapter are well worth studying. First, we will discuss why the Analysis of Variance test 'works' (the central limit theorem). We will then discuss the key assumptions underlying these designs, how to determine whether they have been violated, and some suggestions for action to take if this is the case. Some of the points raised will apply equally to future chapters as to previous chapters, and you will find it worthwhile to bear them in mind as you progress through the book.
