ABSTRACT

Stone circles, temples, theatres, cathedrals and all settings invested with experience of the numinous and sacred are hermetic places of exchange where the given changes form and being is born. Happenings that occur in the theatre of the soul - dreams, nightmares, fantasies, reveries, visions, insights and revelations, all part of the process of becoming conscious, are certainly upsetting and surprising but by way of them psyche rehearses us for scenes of confrontation, enlightenment and choice. Speaking psychologically but continuing the analogy, it offers a play space in which ego and self can act as co-directors. In the soul's theatre each of us seems to find ourselves cast successively as creation, model and creator. Calling themselves The Living Theatre, its interpreters struggled to free actors' inhibitions and prejudices by erasing the barrier between audience and players, thus hoping to create a humanizing atmosphere.
