Despite fierce German efforts, Moscow was not captured in 1941. Hitler planned a more southerly attack for 1942, hoping to capture Stalingrad, drive north along the Volga, and cut off Moscow from the east. This plan failed, as did the plan to capture the oil fields of the Caucasus.
