ABSTRACT
The Great Rite for the Late Master Chung took place in the garden of the Chung’s. It took place because many fortunetellers had all claimed that the spirit of Master Chung Mansu, who had died three years ago was wandering about this house unable to cross over to the otherworld. This was a certainty, according to the fortune-tellers, since after his death his family often fell sick and especially because of the symptoms of Byunghyun, his younger grandson. Byunghyun was twelve that year and due to some unknown ailment he limped or went blind or ran a high fever and no medicine seemed to cure his illness.
