ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that mathematics teaching and learning should be considered as a continuous process. It looks at pupils, teachers and curriculum, which are the three elements in every classroom, but it is also necessary to look at the aims of education. Mathematics is probably the second most important subject in school, as first priority must be given to English. A good way to start discovering how pupils learn mathematics is to think about an individual pupil. This pupil serves as an example which can help a teacher to understand how all pupils learn, in a rather similar way to that in which pupils are given mathematical examples which can help them to understand mathematics. Pupils learn most of their mathematics during lessons and in a typical lesson they are guided by the teacher through a part of the curriculum. The teacher is able to combine various methods of teaching to give different styles of teaching.
