ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the actions of teachers when they are trying to teach mathematics to their pupils. The teachers are just as busy with tasks, which all contribute to their pupils’ education, but only some of these tasks are concerned with the actual teaching of mathematics. In practice, a teacher frequently uses several methods of teaching during every mathematics lesson and the combination and sequencing of these methods creates a teaching style for that lesson. It must be emphasized that the actions of a teacher are closely related to three other factors: the actions of pupils, the school environment and the mathematics curriculum. When teachers set homework the quantity, level and topic must provide useful mathematical work for the pupils. Homework may be compulsory or voluntary for the pupils and the voluntary system involves less work and stress for the teachers.
