ABSTRACT

This chapter describes both a theoretical framework and an applied context for university-community collaboration. It presents a rationale that supports strong university-community partnerships because they are crucial to the learning and development of university students. The chapter explores the roles that have evolved for administration, faculty, and students in support of an active learning paradigm. It argues that it is the creation of strong connections and linkages that ultimately support partnership development for the increased academic achievement of students. The chapter highlights models for outreach involvement that facilitate professional and individual development for university students. Finally, it identifies practical principles and their application concerning the case study of the educational partnership. The work of university partnerships is expanding rapidly as an approach to reduce fragmentation of community relationships and to build social and intellectual capital on behalf of children and youth.
