ABSTRACT

Preservice Education Interns is a program that serves education and/ or science majors from community colleges or four-year institutions who serve as docents, explainers, or teacher assistants in programs offered through the Fermilab Education Office. Fermilab education programs are developed within a framework that takes into account national education goals and standards, the mission of Fermilab, the appropriate use of its facilities, and the talents and interests of its personnel. Structured programs are offered for teachers to learn science, participate in research and internships, develop instructional materials, and experience what educational research and best practice demonstrate will build an effective classroom program and contribute to student learning. The Teachers Academy for Mathematics and Science in Chicago could not have been started without Fermilab participation and leadership derived from its long experience as a partner in science-education outreach initiatives. In the Teacher Resource Center, educators have access to curriculum materials, books, multimedia, educational supply catalogs, periodicals, and newsletters.
