ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the portion of the Fund's grantmaking that involves university-community collaboration, emphasizing the rationale for supporting these partnerships and the centrality of such grantmaking to the accomplishment of the Fund's mission. Fund's grantmaking principles are the underlying beliefs, values, and philosophy that guide the translation of the Fund's mission into specific grantmaking across its program areas. The Fund's newest teacher development work is an initiative called "Students at the Center". The Funds programmatic approach, then, is to improve services for young people, using an institutional framework of schools, community-based organizations, and school-community collaboration. The Fund's most recent grant in this program area is to the American Association for Higher Education to plan an initiative that will support selected universities in their efforts to produce fundamental change in the professional preparation of school guidance counselors who serve students in poor urban and rural communities.
