ABSTRACT

Summarizing findings about culture distilled from interviews and experiences situates the research in an interpretive paradigm. Each Oneida document, selected with the help of an Oneida culture expert and used to stimulate discussion during culture value interviews, emphasized spirituality, and during the culture interviews, all five Oneida educators expressed belief in the Creator and the importance of spirituality. The curriculum coordinator integrates the preceding values and concludes with comments pertaining to educating children for harmonious living. All informants stated that the generalized Native American principles corresponded with Oneida beliefs and should be recognized as principles of culture-based Oneida instruction. The kindergarten teacher’s comments were representative of the other participant’s but addressed instruction specifically: teacher as facillator: indirect rather than direct instruction. Inter-rater reliability of the Oneida study followed a random selection process for coding agreement and resulted in 96% agreement.
