chapter  4
The Making of an Open-Air Drug Market
Pages 32

One of the notorious “home-grown” youth drug gangs was the Committee.15 The members were subsequently arrested and charged for drug-related homicide. Led by Big Alonzo and Mister Dealer, they were responsible for finding and purchasing cocaine, weapons and hiring needed workers. Jordan and Tracy K. Tree (“Kaytree”) managed the money. Franco M. Tilton (Big Til) was an “enforcer” and supervised the preparation of crack cocaine for the market. Given the high risk of being robbed by rival drug dealers or “stick-up boys,” the youth were armed at all times. “After I got robbed,” Big Til stated in an interview, “I figured, well, I got to give me something to protect myself. I don’t want to keep letting [robbers] take my money.”16
