Assessment of Sexual Functioning

The alcoholism and drug abuse field has at last begun to seriously consider its responsibility for dealing with sexual behaviors and problems of its clients. However, a sober scrutiny within the medical/psychiatric community reveals that the average counselor, commonly believed to be an authority on mental health and human sexuality, is no more able to deal with sexual issues than many nonprofessionals. The average counselor in training or in practice tends to be no more knowledgeable or sexually experienced than his age peers and may in fact be less open in matters concerning sexual activity (GAP, 1973).
