ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the model of human occupation which emphasizes the importance of people being involved in doing at all stages of life, from infancy through adulthood and on to the very end of life. The model of human occupation gives rise to an organizing paradigm which serves to foster understanding of the dynamics and the salience of human achievement to mental health in old age. The chapter draws together and synthesizes afresh current thinking about aging and in so doing it provides a rationale and guidelines for the organization of treatment and support systems for elderly individuals suffering from depression. A depressed elderly client with all the psychodynamics of learned helplessness, rolelessness, stress and loss can be given the opportunity of mastering this environment through choice and control options. One effective way of rethinking and refocusing intervention for the elderly is through the use of Independent Living Rehabilitation Programs.
