ABSTRACT
Most of the research literature on the transition to parenthood has little to say about nonhousehold kin. Families are studied as if they exist within household boundaries. In fact, however, the birth of a child is a family event which affects and is affected by family members who not only do not share a common residence with the new parents and their child but who even may live thousands of miles away.
