ABSTRACT

The Structural/Strategic approach to home-school interventions involves using techniques of Structural and Strategic therapy. It attributes school problems to inconsistency in the role demands made on a child at home and school, his/her behavior must be inconsistent about academic achievement, and school problems will develop. A well-functioning home-school system often involves a subtle integration of a wide range of interests and beliefs. Successful therapy requires careful consideration of beliefs and interests of each system component. In addition to the family’s life cycle transitions, therapists need to consider individual developmental issues such as the child’s maturational stage which will affect the way a problem is conceptualized and the possible solutions. Following from the literature and our experience, after the initial assessment interviews, it is crucial to convene at least one meeting of the family and school system members in order to concretize and implement a collaborative solution to the presenting problem.
