ABSTRACT

The history of psychotherapy can be understood as a healing of the artificial dichotomy between mind and body that began sometime back in antiquity. This split between mind and body has been described as a necessary stage in the evolution of the concept of mind and psychology (Jung, 1963). Man came to know himself and to know that he knew himself. This self-reflexive understanding—to know that he knows himself—is the essence of psychology. It required some sort of division or split within the self to reflect the self, just as a mirror is needed to reflect our physical image.
