ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author begins by describing the setting within which therapists work is done; and he begins because the setting within which child therapy occurs is crucial to the question of how the therapy is done. Some people and some families use therapy well and some do not, but it is hard to assess this without trying something with them. The typical distinction made in the field of therapy is between supportive and insight-oriented therapy. Some parents come in seeking long-term therapy for their children. Very few children come to see a therapist before they have seen a pediatrician. Children’s charts often have outside information, from schools, from testing sessions which have occurred, from previous encounters with any of a number of other agencies. The chart also provides a convenient way to communicate back to the referring provider.
