ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes relevant information concerning Apache religiomedical philosophies and practices. It discusses clinical data obtained during the two subsequent years, and presents a second Rorschach protocol and a discussion comparing the two protocols. In 1981, every Apache with whom the Boyers spoke agreed that the shamanic role assumed by Dawnlight was idiosyncratic and that there had been no historical precedent. The ultimate purpose of the ongoing research is to delineate the interactions among social structure, socialization patterns, and personality organization. Given the inconsistencies and other traumatizing elements of their socialization experiences, it is surprising that many of these Apaches are able to meet cultural expectations and become responsible people when they reach grandparental age. While power has no intrinsic quality of good or evil, its human possessor may voluntarily use it for good, shamanic, culture-supporting purposes or evil, witchcraft purposes.
