ABSTRACT

Paul Schreber was very active in his Burschenschaft in a number of committees, and excelled as a mediator and speaker. His life can be divided into six periods. First period: 1842–1863, childhood and youth, to the end of his law studies. Second period: period 1864–1885, from the start of his legal career to the end of the first illness and hospitalization at Flechsig’s Psychiatric University Hospital. Third period: 1886–1893, the zenith and end of his legal career. Fourth period: 1893–1902, the second illness and the years of hospitalization at Sonnenstein Asylum. Fifth period: 1903–1907, the last good years. Sixth period: 1907–1911, the last illness and death in the Leipzig-Dosen Asylum. As a result of Schreber’s action, on July 14, 1902, his appeal was allowed and both the previous decisions of the lower courts upholding the guardianship were overturned.
