ABSTRACT

The elements of foreign culture, material and otherwise, that had been incorporated into camp life were of the people’s own choosing. Inuit education is by no means a straightforward process. Inuit men as well as women often feel very strongly attached to their mothers in a dependent way throughout their lives; and men’s love for their wives tends to acquire some of the same character. It is a common sight in Qipisa to see a married man of any age lying relaxed in his wife’s lap, while she grooms his head or face. Inuit children are often spoken to, using a limited repertoire of exaggerated voices, and the use of these voices by no means matches tidily the verbal content of what is said. Loving words may be uttered in a disgusted or a cold, rejecting voice and hostile words in a loving voice.
