ABSTRACT

As was noted in Chapter 4, researchers have given a great deal of attention in recent years to the study and development of heuristics for representing problems and devising plans for their solutions. Some of this work has been motivated by the desire to understand better how the methods used by skilled problem solvers differ from those of people less skilled in this regard. And some of it has been motivated by the desire to develop computer programs that can solve intellectually demanding problems as well as, or better than, humans do. Whatever the reason, as we noted earlier, this work on problem solving has yielded information that should be useful in efforts to train people to be better problem solvers. Indeed, several programs have been developed that emphasize the teaching of specific heuristics, strategies, or problem-solving techniques like those that have been identified and studied by researchers in recent years.
