ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book sets the tone by highlighting the centrality of group work for the profession and by citing current practice challenges. It explores the agenda for the Symposium. The book describes the value context that gives purpose and meaning to all social work with groups. It explores the critical values of individual self-determination and the interdependence of all people. The book provides understanding of how these creative connections between theory and practice can be accomplished by applying the best of social group work theory and methodology to social work practice in medical and health settings. It focuses on group work with vulnerable populations and communities. The book provides a model of practice for work with minority populations. It presents results from an action-research project that used groups to increase individual competence and develop community child care service.
