ABSTRACT
In exploring the gaps between the “abstract” and the “real” worlds of theory and practice in social work, the author cautions against routine or rigid application of theory and constructs in an effort to fit people and their situations into favored theories. A transactional view is proposed, which enhances our ability to discern which dimension of which theory facilitates our understanding and ability to help particular persons in particular situations.
