ABSTRACT

An initial improvement on the original MMPI, occurring soon after it was developed, was the addition of four validity scales to the clinical scales to measure the test-taking attitude of the person. This addition is one of the major strengths of the MMPI. Another disappointment for some test users is the fact that the MMPI-2 reading level is higher than the reading level of the MMPI. The MMPI-2 has an eighth-grade level whereas the original MMPI has a sixth-grade reading level. We have found, however, that test takers who might be expected to have a lower reading level than the eighth grade are able to understand and answer the MMPI-2 items as long as they can read and the testing situation is arranged so that the test taker feels comfortable asking questions about the test if he or she should run into difficulties with any of the items.
