ABSTRACT

The most significant progress in understanding personality was the emergence of “Big Five” personality structure model proposed by many researchers according to the lexical hypothesis of personality structure. In fact, the indigenous study on Chinese personality had demonstrated Chinese personality structure and the significant differences between Chinese and Western personality structures. Systematic lexical research on Chinese personality has indicated that Chinese personality consists of seven factors which was different from the Western Five Factor Model personality structure. The establishment of Chinese seven-factor personality structure and the adjectives selected in those researches provided theoretical foundation and empirical materials for the compilation of the personality scale for the Chinese. Although adjective rating scales are useful to measure Chinese personality, adjectives have higher variances when measuring personality and are sometimes hard to handle. The “big five” model of Western personality reflects several independent aspects of Western behavioral and personality characteristics.
