ABSTRACT

This chapter's focus differs from others in this volume in that it is explicitly about social innovations vrithin the enterprise rather than new technology policy or technical alliances. The chapter will review current research on the extent of Japanization in Canadian and UK industry, including the author's own recent endeavours. As such it is divided into three substantive sections. The following section will define Japanization and address some of the pertinent conceptual and theoretical issues. Sections 8.3 and 8.4 will report on empirical research, with the former concentrating on case study and research material in Canada and the latter on Japanization in the UK .
