ABSTRACT

Whereas it has always been perfectly normal to be called in and go along for a casting or audition in an outside venue, where you will probably meet the casting director and perhaps several other members of the creative team, these days it is becoming far more common for companies to ask you to ‘self tape’. The reason for this might be that a production is being produced or shot in a city or country many miles away, and it is simply not possible to get actors and creatives in one place for a meeting. It has also been said that some companies may want to cut corners and save money by not having to hire an expensive casting suite, which may indeed be true. Therefore, you may well be asked by casting directors or production companies to put yourself onto tape (well, more likely digital video these days) and email it to them or upload it to a designated website so that the creatives can watch your audition wherever they may be and consider you for the production and role concerned.
