ABSTRACT

The study of memory for dreaming poses a unique validity problem: How do we know that the report is a valid reflection of the original experience? Prior to the advent of modem sleep research, it was maintained that much, if not all, “ dream recall” was a fabulation constructed out of the waking process. However, discovery of objective indicators of the REM dreaming process (Aserinsky & Kleitman. 1953) helped to revive scientific interest in dreaming and to reestablish the credibility of the dream report. Once the validity of the dream report could be established to the satisfaction of most investigators (Rechtschaffen, 1967), factors that determine dream recall could be studied.
