ABSTRACT

The power of recollection depends on the connexion which is formed between sensations or ideas, by means of which they mutually recall each other. By means of association by contiguity, sensations or ideas that have been in the mind together or in close succession unite together or cohere in such a way that the one tends afterwards to recall the other. The connexion that naturally subsists between a sensation or an idea in the mind and that which immediately preceded or followed it is of the strongest and most intimate nature. In local memory the sight or idea of a place tends to recall various objects or incidents that have been associated or connected with it in the mind. Every thought that passes through the mind produces some change in people's physical structure, and the associations that are formed between these thoughts must likewise have corresponding physical changes attending them.
