ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the problems of bullying and inappropriate content online and the role schools can take in educating students to be good cybercitizens. It is fair to say that educational technology pundits did not, in the main, predict and were somewhat slow to spot the explosion in what have become known as social media. Cyberbullying takes the name-calling and mean behaviour of the school playground to a new level as those with a grudge are able to send messages via a range of routes, private and public, over the internet and by phone. The distinction between access and exposure is significant, with access being deliberate and exposure being non-deliberate or coerced viewing of pornographic material. In the UK the South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL) has published a framework against which schools can audit their current position in relation to policy and practice in e-safety called 360 degree safe.
