ABSTRACT

In 1898 the wedding of the Honourable Eleanor Georgina Rolls (18721961) and Sir John Courtown Edward Shelley was announced.1 Held at Ennismore Gardens Church, Kensington on 23 April, the bride was:

Sister of the Honourable C. S. Rolls who was well known throughout the autocar world as an enthusiastic follower of the latest form of recreative locomotion [sic]. Therefore it is not surprising to hear that Mr Rolls drove friends to the church in an elegant motor Victoria, and also in the procession afterwards back to the residence of his family at Rutland Gate, where a reception attended by some four or fi ve hundred guests was held. So far as we know this is the fi rst time (though it certainly will not be the last) in which an autocar has been used by people of independent position in connection with a wedding of any note.2
