ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a tool adapted from management consulting to help examine Israeli school psychologists' ideas about services that they provide, particularly systems-level consultation. The method for thinking innovatively, "in the box," is adapted from Drucker's theory of business, which guides managers through a series of structured questions that challenge every basic assumption. The goal is to help school psychologists to look inward and examine how changing key assumptions can lead to new alternatives for providing psychological services. The Israeli school psychologists at the various levels of service generally concurred that both consultee–centered consultation and systems interventions are key to their mission of providing mental health services in educational settings. Staff from the psychological services in both localities suggested they should work on promoting public recognition of school psychology as a profession devoted primarily to providing mental health services that help students overcome social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties that interfere with functioning in school and prevent further difficulties.
